Bourne Field Hockey Garners Huge Season-Opening Tie with Bulldogs (VIDEO/SLIDESHOW)

BOURNE – Most seasons, facing South Coast Conference rival Old Rochester on opening day would seem daunting at best.

Not this season.

In spite of heavy humidity and temperatures searing in the high 80s, the Bourne Canalwomen field hockey team rode the momentum of sophomore Carly LaCasse’s first half goal en route to a hard-earned tie, 1-1, with the visiting Lady Bulldogs.

“This was huge,” said Bourne head coach Chris Mason. “We played really, really well.”

LaCasse netted her goal with 15 minutes left in the first half to make it 1-0, but it was the rough-and-tumble sheer aggressiveness to the ball by such Bourne stalwarts as senior co-captain Morgan Callahan that kept the Bulldogs at bay throughout.

Sophomore Donia Siroonian and senior Dani Rolfe also performed well for the Canalwomen. Goalkepper Jenna Sundquist, a junior, was equally impressive under pressure.

“There will be doubters,” Coach Mason jotted down as part of her pre-game speech. “There will be obstacles. There will be mistakes. But with hard work… there are no limits.”
