CAPE COD BASEBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP: Title Game Postponed to Tomorrow

HYANNIS — Cape Cod Baseball League fans will have to wait until Wednesday (Aug. 12) to find out who the next league champion is.

Tonight’s title game between the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox and the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, slated for 6:00 pm at McKeon Park, has been postponed to tomorrow at 6:00 pm.

The Harbor Hawks — who were last crowned Cape League champions in 1991 when the team was named the Hyannis Mets — captured the first game of the three-game championship series on Sunday night, 8-1, watched the Y-D Red Sox bats come alive last night at Red Wilson Field while also running into a virtual buzzsaw in Fresno State’s Ricky Thomas.

Thomas, who will likely not return to the mound again, went 7.2 innings Monday night for the win and struck out 10 as Y-D evened the series at 1-1 with a 9-3 finale.

Y-D hammered out 18 hits last night, doubling the team hit total of Hyannis the previous night.

There were 4,185 fans in attendance at last night’s playoff game at Merrill “Red” Wilson Field in South Yarmouth, about 1,000 fans less than the previous night at McKeon Park in Hyannis (5,154), according to league box score data.

The popular 50-50 raffle at Red Wilson Field, though, seemed to be exceedingly more than playoff game number one at Hyannis with the winner going home by some estimates with as much as $1,000 cash.

The winner of tomorrow night’s game will be awarded the vaunted Arnold Mycock Cape Cod Baseball League Championship Trophy. Hyannis has already been crowned the West Division regular season champions and the West Division playoffs champions. Y-D took the Cape League by storm with an incredible East Division playoff run that eliminated the regular season champion Orleans Firebirds in the East playoffs.
