Virginia’s Daniel Pinero provided the first salvo for the ‘Birds in the bottom of the 4th inning when he raked an RBI-double to drive in Mercer’s Kyle Lewis for a 1-0 lead. Pinero then came home on a matching Nick Zammarelli RBI-double that made it 2-0.

The Firebirds added two more in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Ronnie Dawson two-run shot that made it 4-0 and that’s all the stingy Orleans’ pitching staff needed to shut the door on the usually volatile bats of the visiting Sox. Zammarelli (Elon) went 3-3 with one RBI on the night to pace the Orleans’ lineup.

Arizona State righty Eder Erives got the win for Orleans on the mound as he went 6.2 innings and scattered four hits while walking just one. He struck out four. Parker Bean (Liberty), Kit Scheetz (Virginia Tech) and Kyle Serrano (Tennessee) wrapped up the remaining 2.1 innings for the hosts.

Orleans (34-13-1) heads to Merrill “Red” Wilson Field today for a 4:00 pm game against the Y-D Red Sox (24-23) who now face a do-or-die situation.
