Cape Cod Lacrosse Teams Well Represented in Postseason

EAST SANDWICH – The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) announced its Division 1, 2 and 3 South Sectional girls’ and boys’ lacrosse pairings this week and the action gets underway tomorrow (Monday, June 1) with the undefeated Cape & Islands League champion Falmouth Academy girls taking on Martha’s Vineyard and all Division 3 boys’ teams on tap as well.

Led by superlative freshman Jane Earley, the Falmouth Academy Mariners capped off an unbeaten regular season at 14-0, took the Cape & Islands League title for the first time and will also be in the program’s first-ever MIAA postseason. Earley, already a two-year star, blew away the competition this season with 64 goals and 17 assists.

Falmouth Academy is seeded 7^th and the Vineyarders, who finished 11-6-1, are seeded 10^th. The first round south sectional game will face-off at 4:30 pm and be hosted at Falmouth Academy.

“We are very excited,” said Falmouth Academy head coach Sarah Knowles. “It’s nice we are keeping it local and playing Martha’s Vineyard.”

Nantucket’s girls’ lacrosse team, seeded 11^th and also in Division 2, finished the regular season at 10-5 and will face sixth-seeded Fairhaven at Fairhaven on Tuesday at 4:00 pm.

In Division 1 South, the Sandwich Lady Knights, seeded seventh and who finished 10-6-1 on the season, will face the 10^th-seeded Nauset Warriors on Tuesday (June 2) at 5:00 pm at Captain Gerald F. DeConto USN Veterans Memorial Stadium in East Sandwich. Nauset finished the season at 14-6.

In boys’ Division 2 South postseason action, the 5^th-seeded Sandwich Blue Knights earned a first round bye after finishing the regular season at 11-7. Sandwich will face 4^th-seeded Bishop Feehan (12-6) on Tuesday (June 2) at 5:00 pm at Bishop Feehan in Attleboro.

The Dennis-Yarmouth boys’ lacrosse team also earned a first round bye in the Division 2 South Sectional pairings after a solid 15-5 campaign with losses to the Vineyard, Nantucket (2), Sandwich and Marshfield. The Dolphins will face 6^th-seeded Canton (11-6) on Tuesday at Allan Carlsen Field in South Yarmouth at 5:00 pm. Any team facing D-Y in the postseason will have its work cut out for it as the Dolphins boast one of the region’s top lacrosse goaltenders in Sean McNamara and the lightning front-speed attack of Andrew Jamiel and Tom Slovak.

The Cape is best represented in the Division 3 boys’ lacrosse pairings, with 11^th-seeded Upper Cape Tech (14-6), 14^th-seeded St. John Paul II (11-8), 10^th-seeded Bourne (13-5), 9^th-seeded Martha’s Vineyard (11-6) and 4^th-seeded Nantucket (15-3).

The Nantucket Whalers will square off tomorrow (Monday, June 1) against 13^th-seeded Hull (10-8) at 5:00 pm on the island, while Bourne will head to Sacred Heart (15-3) in Kingston for a 5:00 pm start as well. The upstart St. John Paul II Lions laxmen will take on a tough, third-seeded Archbishop Williams at Archie’s at 5:00 pm tomorrow (Monday, June 1) and the Upper Cape Rams will venture to Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School in Franklin, also on Monday at 5:00 pm.
