BREWSTER — Cape Cod Tech defeated St. John Paul II in golf yesterday at the Ocean Edge Resort for the first time in the two schools’ five-year rivalry, 29-25, despite the day’s low score (43) being recorded by Saint John Paul II freshman Kristina Thimme.

The Cape & Islands League contest — the 2015 season-opener for both teams — puts the Crusaders in first place with Sturgis West to start the season. West defeated Sturgis East in its opener in Hyannis on Thursday (see related story).

Cape Cod Tech’s Number one and number two golfers — John Clark and Dan Puopolo — proved the difference. Clark defeated the Lions’ Patrick Connolly, 7-2, and Puopolo downed John “Waldo” Walden, 5.5 to 3.5 to help the Crusaders build a 12.5 to 5.5 lead.

In the match’s second flight, St. John Paul II frosh Thimme showed her resolve in defeating Crusaders’ senior captain Jon Spahr, 5.5 to 3.5 and fellow Lion frosh Patrick Armstrong defeated Crusader junior Zach Vaughn, 5.5 to 3.5, but it was not enough for the Lions to overcome the first flight deficit.

In the third flight, Cape Tech freshman Nick Packett beat St. John Paul II freshman Jack Greer, 5-4, while the Lions’ Aidan Hatton tied Cape Tech freshman Andrew Mead, 4.5 to 4.5.
