Clipper Girls Salvage Tie Against Watertown

WATERTOWN — The Falmouth High girls hockey team (4-0-1) remains undefeated.

But leaving the John A. Ryan Skating Arena Tuesday night, and watching the bright lights and big city behind them in the rearview mirror, did not come without some exceptional effort

to make sure that unbeaten mark stayed intact. The Falmouth High School (4-0-1) girls ice hockey team ended their road battle with Watertown High in a 3-3 tie and what came down to some pretty nifty third period heroics.

Down 3-2 heading into the third period, junior forward Emily Sanidas fed Brooke Bowman to tie it up at 3-3 and salvage the Clippers’ unblemished record as they head into the lions’ den against Barnstable on Saturday night in Hyannis. Sanidas also scored the Clippers’ second goal in the second period to keep them within striking distance, but it was not before the hosts fired three pucks into the net to erase what had been a 1-0 Falmouth lead.

Falmouth’s Shannon Upton, a sophomore forward, drew first blood in the first period on an assist from freshman forward Emma Callahan that made it 1-0, but then it must have felt like the roof was caving in when Watertown came roaring back in the second to make it 3-1. Sanidas’ goal, at least, gave the guests a fighting chance with a 3-2 score. Senior forward and assistant captain Kelly Ferreira and senior assistant captain Callan Small both assisted on the Clippers’ second period goal.

Bowman provided the game-tying goal in the third period that made the long bus ride home at least somewhat pleasant.

“I would have liked the win,” head coach Erin Hunt said. “But it was a good battle. I like how we came from behind in the third.”

Barnstable is also unbeaten on the still young season, albeit at only 1-0 after defeating Sandwich, 2-0, on Saturday.

Falmouth’s road can’t be much more difficult than it’s already scheduled to be. After Barnstable it faces Springfield Cathedral and then Milton.
