Corey, Crawley Belt Home Runs, Pace Red Raiders to Win Over Nauset

NORTH EASTHAM – Scratching and clawing and battling for every run, the Barnstable High softball team won its third game of the still young season Monday afternoon, taking down the host Nauset Warriors (0-8), 12-8, thanks in part to some solid hitting.

Red Raider catcher Jaime Corey went 3-5 on the day with three RBI and a home run, while teammate Mia Crawley belted a home run as part of a 2-4 day at the plate, with two RBI.

The Barnstable slugging display helped notch the win for Kerry Lee McNeil who got the starting nod in the circle from head coach Martha Deusser.

“(McNeil) worked extremely hard today in unpleasant weather,” Coach Deusser said. “She had a challenging fifth inning but battled through.”

Taking a 9-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, Nauset erupted for six runs to narrow the deficit to 9-7 before McNeil settled to get out of the jam. Through four innings of work, McNeil had held the host Warriors to just one run on three walks and just two hits, but in the fifth frame McNeil walked five while allowing just one hit, as six runs came across.

The Red Raiders had McNeil’s back, though, and plated three insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings to settle the hurler’s nerves. She allowed just one more run in the bottom of the seventh.

Coach Deusser attributed part of the Red Raiders’ success to strong up-the-middle play by shortstop Ashlie Curtiss and second baseman Danielle Curtin. Curtiss was no slouch at the plate, either, as she went 2-5 with one RBI.

“(They) are solid for us,” Coach Deusser said. “(They are) working so well together turning double plays.”

Nauset’s Mattie Clements picked up a pair of hits with a 2-2 day at the plate and scored a pair of runs for the hosts.

The Warriors’ righty ace Natalie Keagul struck out 10 Red Raiders in the complete-game effort.

Barnstable faces Dartmouth Tuesday at 4:00 on the road.
