D-Y Dolphins, Cape Cod Academy Boys Take Soccer Openers

PLYMOUTH — In just his third year at the helm, Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School boys’ head soccer coach Bill Altieri has learned how to perfect his green thumb.

Likening the development of his Dolphins to that of a gardener and his crop, Altieri said Tuesday’s season-opening win was nothing less than the result of three years of hard work as the Green & White took a 2-1 non-league victory over the host Plymouth North Eagles.

“I was very happy with the win,” Altieri said. “We kept grinding along and grinding along and the Eagles faded in the second half. We had some first game jitters but we had a very good game. They have a great attitude.”

Dennis-Yarmouth found itself down 1-0 at halftime but with the 90-degree heat and intense humidity Tuesday, both head coaches agreed to take a five-minute break at the 20-minute mark of each 40-minute half to make sure players for both teams were hydrated. The agreement paid off for D-Y as the Dolphins turned a first half with a blustery wind in their collective faces into an all-out, forward-moving attack in the second half.

“We had just 13 players today,” Altieri said, and noted that four varsity players were sidelined with injuries for the game, including second-year co-captain Jake Gleason. “Once we got the second goal, we played kill the clock in the second half and used time management to our advantage. We pulled it out. They had us in the first half and we had the wind in our face. It was difficult and we weren’t moving well (in the first half).”

But in the second half, co-captain Max Parent came through to tie the game at 1-1 and then K.C. Sinha nailed the gamewinner.

Altieri credited Dolphins’ sweeper Braedy Leidner with a “great game,” as well as Hans FanFan and Tom Pecoraro. He also noted that goalkeeper Ryan Giffee played solid with five saves, while on the other end it was the Dolphins who peppered Plymouth North with as many as 15 shots on goal.

“It was 2-1, but we should have had two or three more,” Altieiri said. “They played a very deep sweeper and we had to cover him. We had to play a lot of one on one.”

The Dolphins (1-0) next face Plymouth South at home on Saturday at 1:30 pm.

Cape Cod Academy – 5
Trinity Academy – 0

OSTERVILLE — The Cape Cod Academy boys’ soccer team (1-0) kicked off the season on the right foot Tuesday afternoon as five different Seahawks scored to help down the visiting Trinity Academy squad, 5-0.

The win for the hosts was not entirely a simple one, however, as Trinity held the Seahawks to just a 1-0 lead in the first half.

Cape Cod Academy senior co-captain Truman Rountree made it 1-0 at 20:00 of the first stanza as the center half collected a goal kick from Trinity keeper Joe Willey and powered forward to crack a 20-yard, unassisted shot with his left foot into the lower left corner.

“The Trinity keeper (Joe Willey) kept our forwards to one goal in the first with some great reaction saves,” said Cape Cod Academy head coach Alan Bell.

But in the second half, within the 1st minute of play, Cape Cod Academy junior Ben Siegel broke free on the left wing and he found junior co-captain Will McCutcheon free on the right side of the goal for a nicely placed left foot tap in and a 2-0 lead.

Some 15 minutes later, Seahawks junior co-captain Will Olsen made it 3-0 off of a Sam Markham feed and the momentum created by the Academy defense had fully taken root for the hosts.

“(It was) exactly the same set up as (goal) number two,” Coach Bell said. “Hard work in practice pays off.”

In the 31st minute of the second half, sophomore Shaw Sun took a midfield pass from senior co-captain John Wetzel and made it 4-0. Wetzel, who stole the ball at midfield, fed the ball to Sun from right of center and Shaw showed off some fancy footwork before hammering the ball into the bottom left of the net with his left foot.

Cape Cod Academy freshman Patrick Marta made it 5-0 a minute later after taking a pass from sophomore Peter Ren.

“Stepping up from the bench, two underclassmen combined to score our last goal,” Coach Bell said. “Ren collected a pass out of midfield, fed Patrick Marta down the right side… Patrick kept his composure to move the ball forward and kick it past the keeper.”

“We got some great combination plays and a lot of time on the ball from our center midfielders today (Carter Pemberton and Truman Rountree). Will Olsen, Will McCutcheon and John Wetzel also gave us solid performances no matter where I asked them to play,” Bell said.
