SOUTH YARMOUTH — The Dennis-Yarmouth girls’ tennis team notched their first win of the season and did so decisively, as the Dolphins defeated Mashpee High, 5-0.
Tess Ciarcia led the way for the Dolphins with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Mashpee High’s Paulina Remis-Serna at number one singles and the rest of the Dolphins followed suit.
At number two singles, Laryssa Dumont blanked Rory Sullivan, 6-0, 6-0, and at number three singles Taylor McDowell defeated Meaghan Sheehan, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action, Virginia Liu and Rebecca Khachikian beat Mashpee’s Emily Kelleher and Caroline Henley, 6-2, 6-0, and the duo of Victoria Liu and Melina Behnke beat McKenzie Moniz and Maia Fudala, 6-0, 6-0 at number two doubles.
The Dolphins are now 1-7 on the season while the Falcons fell to 0-8 in the non-league contest. D-Y hosts Marshfield on Wednesday in an Atlantic Coast League contest, while Mashpee next faces Monomoy on Tuesday (May 5).
Nauset – 5
St. John Paul II – 0
The 8-1 Nauset Warrior tennis girls continued their winning ways Monday at the Orleans Elementary School, defeating a very tough St. John Paul II girls’ team (4-6) by a score of 5-0.
Senior co-captain and number one Warrior singles player Allie Dadoly defeated Lady Lions senior co-captain Haylee Whiteley in a hard-fought battle, 6-4, 6-2, giving Whiteley one of her few losses this season, while Dadoly’s sister Nika defeated Lady Lions’ junior co-captain Emily Canzano by an almost equal margin, 6-1, 6-4.
The number three singles match-up between Nauset’s Haley Navarro and St. John Paul II’s Allison Santos proved the true contest of the day, with Navarro winnign the first set, 6-2, then Santos roaring back to take the second set, 7-5. Navarro prevailed, though, taking the tiebreaker, 6-3.
In number one doubles, Nauset co-captains Anna Godshalk and Haley Benz defeated Jacqueline Germani and Rachel McLellan, 6-0, 6-2, and then Warriors’ number two doubles team Taylor Wilkins and Carlisle Wheeler made it a clean sweep by beating Julia Grady and Emily Bean, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3), in yet another fiercely contest match-up.
“The matches were hard fought and very well played throughout,” said St. John Paul II head coach Katie Dombrowski.
The Lady Lions will try and get back on track on Monday (May 11) at Dennis-Yarmouth, while Nauset is at Sandwich on Wednesday in an Atlantic Coast League match-up. Nauset is 4-0 in the ACL.
