THE CAPE LEAGUE: Dalbec, Lewis & ‘Birds Pound on Hyannis, Clinch East Title (Slideshow)

HYANNIS — As the Hyannis Harbor Hawks’ bullpen worked frantically to get ready, Arizona’s Bobby Dalbec and Mercer’s Kyle Lewis gave ‘Hawks starter Devin Smeltzer (Florida Gulf Coast) no respite last night.

Dalbec hammered his 11th homer of the season — an opposite-field grand slam — and Lewis followed with a solo shot to the deepest part of McKeon Park as the visiting Firebirds built a 9-0, second inning lead. At that early stage of the game, Orleans had already accumulated 10 hits. By game’s end, the Firebirds’ victory had clinched the 2015 East Division championship title.

But Hyannis did not lay down as the Hawks bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the second inning as Errol Robinson (Ole Miss) hammered a Kyle Serrano offering off of the left field fence to clear the bases and whittle the Orleans’ lead down to 9-3.

Utlimately, Orleans won this mad hit-fest, 12-8, and when the dust finally had settled there were 32 hits tallied by both teams combined.

Lewis led all batters with a 4-5 night and four RBI, including the solo shot, while Dalbec went 2-3 with four RBI, including his grand slam. Orleans’ Sean Murphy (Wright State), Daniel Pinero (Virginia), Jeremy Martinez (USC) and Bryan Reynolds (Vanderbilt) each had two hits for the visitors.

Robinson went 3-5 for Hyannis and drove in three runs, while Corey Bird (Marshall), Austin Hays (Jacksonville) and Dave Martinelli (Dallas Baptist) each had two hits for the ‘Hawks.

Hyannis catcher Arden Pabst (Georgia Tech) went 3-5 with one RBI.

Corbin Burnes (St. Mary’s) got the win after three innings of middle relief while Smeltzer took the loss for Hyannis.

The Firebirds are now 28-12-1 on the season with three regular season games remaining before the playoffs begin Monday night. Even if the ‘Birds lost all three, no team in the East could catch up to them for first place honors.

Falmouth Commodores Turn On Bats, Beat Brewster Whitecaps

In a game shortened to seven innings due to darkness at Stony Brook Field, the Falmouth Commodores made the battle for a final West Division playoff spot an interesting one with an 11-7 finale over the Brewster Whitecaps last night.

J.B. Woodman (Ole Miss) hit his first home run of the season and went 2-4 with two RBI for the Commodores while JJ Matijevic (Arizona) went 2-4 and scored a run.

Conor Costello (Oklahoma State) upped his record to 2-3 on the season with the win after five solid innings of work. He struck out four, walked four and allowed two runs on five hits.

Brewster’s Ryan Peurifoy belted his first home run of the summer as well and went 2-3 with three RBI. Teammates Colin Lyman and Nick Senzel (Tennessee) both added a pair of hits in the losing cause.

Slugger Brusa Comes Through for Y-D Red Sox over Chatham Anglers

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox bruiser Gio Brusa (Pacific) hit a clutch sacrifice fly in the seventh inning last night at Veterans Field to give the visiting Sox a 2-1 win over the host Chatham Anglers.

Brusa went 1-3 with one RBIS on the night, but it was his RBI that unlocked a 1-1 tie after Josh Vidales (Houston) had scored on a passed ball to tie it at 1-1.

Chatham’s Will Craig went 2-4 with one RBI for the host Anglers.

Y-D’s Ben Bowden (Vanderbilt), a southpaw who hails from Lynn, got the victory in relief of starter Brandon Bailey (Gonzaga). Bowden went 3.2 innings and struck out seven batters while walking two. He allowed no runs and no hits in the stellar relief effort.

Bourne Braves Put Damper on Cotuit’s Bid to Clinch Final Playoff Spot

Nick Solak (Louisville) went 3-5 with four RBI from the leadoff spot last night at Doran Park as his Bourne Braves took a 10-7 win from the visiting Cotuit Kettleers.

Brendan McKay (Louisville), Jason Delay (Vanderbilt) and Jacob Robson (Mississippi State) each added two hits on the night for Bourne, with McKay driving in two runs. Left-fielder Reid Humphreys (Mississippi State) went 1-4 and added two RBI to the effort.

Kyle Driscoll (Rutgers), a 6’7″ righty reliever, came on in the 8th inning for the Braves and shut the door on the Kettleers. He struck out two in 1.1 innings of work walked one and allowed one hit.

Even though Doran Park has lights, the game was called due to rain in the 7th inning after Bourne plated a pair of insurance runs on a Solak two-run double that scored Delay and Robson. The Kettleers had held a 5-0 lead before Bourne came back to score 10 runs.

Duke southpaw Mitch Stallings took the loss for Cotuit after pitching the sixth and seventh innings. He allowed three runs on five hits.

Tim Susnara (Oegon), Saige Jenco (Virginia Tech) and Cole Fabio (Bryant) each had two hits for Cotuit from the bottom of the order. Fabio drove in two runs and Jenco had one RBI.

Jabs Leads Wareham Past Harwich Mariners at Spillane Fieldin Spite of Rain Delay

Franklin Pierce’s Jamison Jabs put on a banner hitting display with three hits in four tries and two runs driven in last night to pace his Wareham Gatemen to a 5-2 win over the visiting Harwich Mariners at Clement S. Spillane Field.

The game was delayed in the sixth inning due to monsoon-like rain.

Stanford righty Brett Hanewich got the victory after five innings of work and eight strikeouts.

Gavin Stupienski (UNC-Wilmington), Wareham’s catcher, went 2-4 with one RBI to add to the effort. It was Stupienski and Charlie Warren (Rice) who both scored on a Jabs’ two-run double in the second inning and an Andrew Calica (UC-Santa Barbara) suicide squeeze bunt to plate Jabs that spelled the difference.
