Delaney Commits to Play Lax at Lynchburg

HYANNIS – Persistence, they say, pays off.

One of the area’s top athletes since grade school, Barnstable High School senior Bo Delaney committed last month to play collegiate lacrosse at NCAA Div. III Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia and will join the Hornets in the fall of 2015.

An Old Colony League All-Star in football this season with 743 all-purpose yards (526 yds. Receiving), Delaney was a rare junior captain on last year’s Barnstable High School lacrosse team. He will likely be re-named a captain this spring for head coach Chris Whidden’s Red Raider Laxmen. Delaney was 13th in the state of Massachusetts this season with yards receiving, according to maxpreps.com.

Delaney, a two-time All-Conference player for the Red & White – 2013 Maritime League All-Star and 2014 Old Colony League All-Star – scored 12 goals last season including an early season hat-trick versus New Bedford. His expertise, however, lays largely on his midfield and face-off skills.

“I’m psyched,” Delaney said. “It’s the perfect fit for me. Coach (Steve) Koudelka has been the head coach for 19 years and the coaching staff is what really won me over. I love the place.”

Lightning fast and sure-handed, Delaney (who is actually Bo Delaney IV), hails from a long line of superior high school and collegiate athletes. His father, Bo Delaney III, wrestled at NCAA Div. 1 Delaware (Class of 1992). His grandfather, Bo “Bodie” Delaney II, played football at East Tennessee State and his great grandfather, Bo Delaney I, was a tight end at Princeton in the 1930s (both were called Ben) and was named one of the Tigers’ “Last Iron Men.”

Lynchburg lacrosse captured its fifth Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship last season with a 17-5 record. In two of Delaney’s three seasons at Barnstable High, the Red Raiders have been crowned Maritime League champions.

“I was focusing on programs like Gettysburg, Washington College, Denison, Roanoke and Ohio Wesleyan University, but after a recruiting showcase in January of last year in Lynchburg, that’s when I knew it was the place I wanted to be. It became my number one goal,” Delaney said.
