Doubleheader Madness: Cape League’s Monday Boasts 10 games (SLIDESHOW)

HYANNIS – In a long day of Cape League doubleheaders, the Chatham Anglers swept a pair from the host Hyannis Harbor Hawks Monday night, while the Harwich Mariners took two from the host Cotuit Kettleers at Lowell Park earlier in the afternoon.

The Wareham Gatemen split their doubleheader with the Brewster Whitecaps at Clem Spillane Field, as did the Orleans Firebirds and the Bourne Braves at Doran Park.

The Y-D Red Sox made up considerable ground with a pair of wins over the host Falmouth Commodores at Elmer “Guv” Fuller Field in downtown Falmouth.

Chatham plated all the run support its starting pitcher Parker Dunshee (Wake Forest) needed Monday night with a three-spot in the first frame as Dunshee turned in six strong innings with three strikeouts and no walks. Dunshee is now 2-0 in as many starts for the Anglers with a 1.64 earned run average.

The Anglers jumped all over Hyannis starter Dakota Hudson (Mississippi State) as three out of the first four Harbor Hawk batters singled mixed in with a walk and an infield error for a 3-0 lead that held up through to the end of the affair.

Interestingly, Chatham would manage just one more hit off of Hudson the rest of the way and garnered no hits off of closer Logan Salow. Combined, the two Hyannis pitchers struck out 10 with Hudson fanning seven and Salow, three. Hudson walked just one batter and that was in the first inning.

The Harbor Hawks outhit the Anglers in this doubleheader nightcap – six to four – with Kentucky’s JaVon Shelby going 2-3 with one RBI and Blake Tiberi (Louisville) turning in a 3-3

performance.

Down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Hyannis had bases loaded with no outs but could not plate the tying run as Chatham’s Andre Scrubb (High Point) struck out one and induced a game-ending double play to get out of the jam.

Chatham Anglers 3 – Hyannis Harbor Hawks 1: in the earlier game, a two-run second inning proved the difference for the Anglers as its trio of pitchers – Ty Damron (Texas Tech), Carl Burdick (San Diego) and Aaron McGarity (Virginia Tech) – held the Harbor Hawks to just three hits totaled.

Damron went five innings and struck out four while giving up two hits and walking just one for the win.

Sacred Heart’s Zack Short belted a solo home run to lead off the top of the second inning, followed by a Luke Persico (UCLA) double with Persico coming home on a Trenton Brooks single that made it 2-1. Chatham tacked on an insurance run in the top of the 7th inning with a bases loaded walk for the 3-1 finale.

Early-inning rallies seemed par for the course Monday night, as Harwich picked up a pair of quick runs on its host Cotuit Kettleers and continued to build upon an early 2-0 lead en route to a 5-1 final in the first of two games at Lowell Park Monday night.

Adam Pate (North Carolina) doubled with one out in the top of the first inning and Notre Dame’s Cavan Biggo followed with a double of his own to make it 1-0, and then Biggio came home to make it 2-0 on a Connor Justus (Georgia Tech) RBI-basehit. Biggio went 2-3 with two RBI in the game while catcher Michael Hernandez (Nova Southeastern) went 1-3 with three RBI with a three-run homer in the sixth inning to solidify the victory.

North Carolina freshman southpaw Hunter Williams went five innings for the win and struck out five. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks.

Harwich Mariners 5 – Cotuit Kettleers 3

Down 3-2 heading into the seventh inning in the second game of the twinbill, Harwich loaded the bases quickly and got an RBI-basehit from Saige Jenco to tie it at 3-3, then Nick Walker hit a sac fly to drive in Pate for what would prove to be the eventual game-winner.  Jenco scored an insurance run on another sac fly from Preston Palmeiro (NC State).

(Elmer “Guv” Fuller Field, Falmouth)

The Y-D Red Sox picked a gorgeous day to turn things around as they broke a 1-1 deadlock against the host Falmouth Commodores with two runs in the fifth and then tacked on another two in the sixth just to make sure of the win in the first of two games at Fuller Field Monday night.

After Connor Wong  (Houston) was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the fifth inning, Dan Rizzie (Xavier) singled for the Red Sox to put runners on the corners and then an error by the Commodores’ catcher gave Y-D all it would need as Wong scored with ease for a 2-1 lead it would not relinquish.

Fresno State freshman southpaw Ricky Thomas got the win for the Sox after 5.2 innings to give himself a 2-0 record on the season with a 0.77 earned run average. Thomas struck out seven, walked one and scattered four hits.

In the second game, Falmouth saw a 6-3 lead evaporate in the top of the seventh inning as Commodore reliever Wyatt Short (Ole Miss) walked Y-D’s Tommy Edman (Stanford) to lead off the inning, Donovan Walton (Oklahoma State) followed with a single and then Michael Donadio (St. John’s) belted a ground-rule double to get things rolling. With men on second and third and down 6-4, Giovanni Brusa (Pacific) grounded to short to drive in Walton who made it 6-5, and then Stephen Wrenn (Georgia)  tied it up with an RBI basehit to drive in Donadio.

With one out and Wrenn on third base (stolen base), Wong grounded out to bring him home for the game-winning run.

Y-D’s closer, Christopher Viall (Stanford) notched the win with a clean seventh frame that included one strikeout.

Michigan’s Evan Hill and UCLA’s Grant Dyer combined for a 5-0, nightcap shutout at Spillane Field last night, and avenged an earlier 5-4 loss to the visiting Brewster Whitecaps as the two

teams split their doubleheader rained out from Fathers’ Day (all Cape League games were rained out Sunday, June 21).

Hill went six innings and fanned two, while walking just one and scattering three hits. Dyer struck out two and allowed no baserunners in the shutout effort.

Andrew Knizer (NC State) and Logan Sowers (Indiana) each drove in two runs but the Gatemen collected only four hits that helped produce the five runs for the hosts.

Tied 1-1 after three complete in the first inning, Brewster turned it up in the top of the fourth with a four-run rally and Wareham never fully recovered from the blow.

Ryan Peurifoy (Georgia Tech) led off the fourth with a triple and scored on a passed ball by the catcher to make it 2-1, and then Chandler Avant and Cassidy Brown both singled to keep the momentum flowing for the guests. A series of passed balls and wild pitches, combined with an Eli White (Clemson) RBI-double eventually gave Brewster a 5-3 lead and all it would need.

Trent Paddon (Oregon) got the win in middle relief for the Whitecaps and spoiled a 3-4 day at the plate by Wareham’s Kramer Robertson (LSU) and a 2-2 day from Nick Cieri (Maryland) who also had two RBI.

to a 3-0 win Monday night at Doran Park over the host Bourne Braves.

Closer Joe Ryan (Cal State-Northridge) went two perfect innings for the save and struck out three.

All the Firebirds needed for the win came in the sixth frame as both teams were locked in a scoreless tie.

Orleans got singles from Jeremy Martinez (USC), Trey York (East Tennessee State), Tres Barrera (Texas) and Austin Miller (LMU) in the sixth inning to piece together a 3-0 lead that held up to give the Firebirds what they needed to win. The victory put Jordan at 2-0 on the season with a 0.00 earned run average thus far.

In the nightcap, the Braves returned the favor by hammering out 10 hits, with four Braves picking up two each.

Mississippi State tandem  Jacob Robson and Reid Humphreys went 2-3 with two RBI and 2-4 with one RBI, respectively, and Ryan Boldt (Nebraska) went 2-4 and Mike Garzillo (Lehigh) went 2-4.

Middle reliever Bryan Baker (North Florida) got the win for the Braves by doing the bulk of the mound work with 3.1 innings on the hill. He struck out five and allowed no runs, no hits and walked none.
