Falmouth Academy Five Eliminate Upper Cape Tech Rams from Postseason

FALMOUTH – Defense, defense, defense.

Thanks to a stifling defensive effort that never really allowed Upper Cape Tech to get rolling last night, the 19-3, 4th-seeded Falmouth Academy girls’ basketball team overran the 5th-seeded Rams last night, 55-31, and will now advance to the MIAA Division 4 South Sectional Tournament quarterfinals early next week.

“It was a defense and rebounding clinic,” Falmouth Academy head coach Gus Adams said of his girls’ effort.

The Mariners will face the winner of today’s St. John Paul II/Greater New Bedford Voke match-up.

Falmouth Academy freshman extraordinaire Kendall Currence paced all scorers with 24 points, while fellow frosh Jane Earley netted a career-high 14 as the Mariners took an early lead over Upper Cape Tech and never looked back.

It was a matter of playing the best possible defense that they knew how, according to Falmouth Academy head coach Gus Adams.

“I don’t think Upper Cape was ready for what they saw,” Adams said. “Basically, I think we can defend anybody.”

On the flip-side, Upper Cape Tech applied a full-court press to the host Mariners but the Mariners had relatively little trouble breaking it and thus forced the visiting Rams to switch back into a zone defense.

“Once they did that, we jumped even further ahead and they were forced to go back into the press to try and catch up,” Adams said.

Catching up to Falmouth Academy was no short order, though, as Currence and Earley combined for 38 total points and Eliza Van Voorhis staged one of her best performances of the season all around.

“She was awesome,” Adams said. “She had a tremendous game.”

Van Voorhis was the third Mariner to enter into the double digits, offensively, with 10 points to her credit, but on the other end of the floor she was twice as successful. Van Voorhis notched a double-double with 14 rebounds and tacked on five steals.

Christie Brake, Taylor Mulhearn and Clemmie Prang added four, two and one point, respectively.

The Academy girls took an early, 8-5 lead after the first quarter but then shifted into overdrive as they took off running and gunning for 21 second quarter points. Earley was key in that second quarter onslaught with a trio of three pointers.

At the half, Falmouth Academy led 29-13 and by the end of three frames, 41-22.

Currence went 10-12 from the free throw line as part of her 24-point output.

Amber DiBona was the high-scorer for Upper Cape Tech with 14 points and Dasia Green and Krystle DiBona each had six points. Upper Cape Tech finishes its season at 18-4.
