Cape Cod Cup: Storey Leads Falmouth Boys to Season’s First Win

FALMOUTH — Nothing feels quite as good as that first victory.

The previously winless Falmouth High School boys hockey team (1-3) made last night what head coach Paul Moore described as a critical “turning point in our season” as the hosts

defeated the tough-to-beat Chelmsford High Lions (2-2-1), 3-1, in the nightcap of the Cape Cod Cup.

And the reason for that victory, Coach Moore explained, fell largely upon the shoulders of senior goalie Kyle Storey. On the Falmouth junior varsity squad last season, the senior was relegated to back-up duty until last night when he was promoted to the starting varsity role.

“We needed to make that decision,” Moore said, explaining that it was not an easy one replacing junior captain Nick Cline in net. “We really came together as a team tonight.”

Indeed.

After watching their first two games slip away to start this year’s campaign, and then get roughed up a bit last weekend by Catholic Memorial, the Clippers righted their ship by beating one of the state’s perennial top teams in Chelmsford on Falmouth’s home ice.

“I felt good for the kids to get that monkey off their backs,” Moore said.

Falmouth’s first goal came on a power play as the Tobey brothers collaborated to infuse fire into their teammates’ hearts with an inspiring, first-period goal. Junior defenseman Thomas Tobey slammed it home on an assist by his little brother, Cam Tobey, to make it 1-0. That score would remain intact through two periods as Storey repelled shot after Chelmsford shot on goal.

“Last night, he was the best player on the ice,” Moore said of his goaltender.

But just into the third period, Chelmsford knotted things at 1-1 on an unassisted broken play. Storey had been pelted, Moore said, with about four or five shots within “a 30-second time frame,” but still he played brilliantly.

With about 9:00 minutes left in the game, sophomore wing Jacob “Jake” Miller added to the evening’s heroics when he uncorked a wrist shot at the top of the slot for the game-winner. He was assisted by Arlin Moore and Nick Marston to make it 2-1, Falmouth.

The Chelmsford braintrust then opted to pull the team’s goalie with about 0:50 seconds remaining and sophomore win Cooper Rogers ensured the win with an empty-netter, assisted by Sam Walker and Patrick Coyne.

“We were actually out-shot by Chelmsford 25-21,” Moore said. “We had to make a decision this week and we needed to make that decision (to change goalies).”

Tomorrow, Falmouth takes on Westford Academy at 1:00 pm. Earlier in the day, Westford Academy tied Archbishop Williams, 4-4, in the matinee game of the Cape Cod Cup.
