Falmouth Clipper Girls Ready to Take on Burlington in Div. 2 Semifinals Tonight

BOURNE – The last high school hockey team on Cape Cod alive and kicking just may have a secret weapon or two.

The #8-seeded Falmouth Clipper girls (18-4-2) will be on the ice tonight (Monday, March 9) at 6:00 pm at the John Gallo Ice Arena to face the #12-seeded, high-flying Burlington High Red Devils (17-5-1) in the MIAA Division 2 Girls’ Hockey State Semifinals.

Should the Clippers win, they will once again take a visit to the TD Garden for the Division 2 State Championship title versus either #2-seeded Wellesley (18-1-3) or #6-seeded Medfield (16-2-4). The Division 2 State Championship game will be held Sunday, March 15, at the TD Garden.

While the Red Devils boast high-scoring freshman Kelly Browne, the Falmouth Clippers are loaded with underclassmen talent with the likes of team top-scorer McKenzie Haberl and super sophs Ericka Meissner, Brooke Bowman and Shannon Upton.

Not to fail to mention senior goalie Madison Scavotto, perhaps the top girls’ goaltender in the region this season. Scavotto, as well as fellow senior stalwarts Kelly Ferreira, Maggie MacDonald and Madison Haberl, were all part of the 19U Cape Cod Storm National Championship team last summer.

The secret weapon for Falmouth tonight may just be big-time experience in big-time situations.

Scavotto, a reigning Boston Globe All-Scholastic backstop and perennial SEMGHL Coastal Division All-Star, as well as two-time team captain, is used to the bright spotlight and big moments. She should be, the Clippers went to the TD Garden for the state final in each of the two seasons previous to her junior campaign.

And all of the Clippers’ success over the past four seasons can be largely credited to the tutelage of former Boston College Eagle defenseman and Falmouth head coach Erin Hunt.

Throw in players like seniors Callan Small and Hannah Callahan, and the recipe is there for – at a base minimum – one heck of a hockey game tonight.

Both Falmouth and Burlington are riding the wave of three-game postseason winning streaks.

Falmouth’s true edge in this affair: staging a major upset of top-ranked Barnstable two weeks ago to capture the SEMGHL Coastal Division championship title outright.

Our money is on the Clippers.
