“We are Family”: Bonasia’s Dolphins Top MIAA D2 Softball Seedings

SOUTH YARMOUTH – Sister Sledge would be proud.

While sophomore righty Sammi Feinstein may have dominated the headlines just as much as she dominated opposing hitters for the Dennis-Yarmouth softball team this spring, the chemistry of the Dolphin lineup is about as strong as it gets and the end result was the top seeding for tomorrow’s MIAA Division 2 Softball South Sectionals.

The Dolphins’ head coach since 1987, Mike Bonasia led his girls to a new school record this spring with their 18-2 record and captured their second Atlantic Coast League title on the second-to-last day of the regular season with a decisive, 4-0 shutout over the rival Marshfield Rams.

As Bonasia said after his team clinched the title, harkening back to the 1979 hit single, “We are family here.”

Friday, the Dolphins will face the winner of today’s match-up between 17th seeded Falmouth High (10-10) and 16th-seeded Fontbonne Academy (3:30 pm at Fontbonne in Milton). Dennis-Yarmouth is averaging 10.55 runs per game this season and is collectively batting .410. The Dolphins received a bye from the preliminary round as the top seed.

Either Falmouth or Fontbonne will face Dennis-Yarmouth Friday (June 5) at D-Y at 3:30 pm.

Headlining the MIAA Div. 3 Softball South Sectional bracket is the formidable Sturgis West softball team that finished at 13-3. It is the first time in school history that West has been awarded the top seeding in the postseason bracket. Like nearby Division 2 powerhouse Dennis-Yarmouth, Sturgis West earned a bye in the Division 3 South Sectionals from the preliminary round and will play host to the winner of tomorrow’s game between 16th-seeded Nantucket (11-9) and 17th-seeded Upper Cape Tech (11-9). The Whalers and the Rams square off on the island tomorrow (Wednesday, June 3) at 4:00 pm. The date and time have yet to be set for the Sturgis West first round game versus the winner of Nantucket and Upper Cape Tech.

After winning their first-ever Cape & Islands League crown with a 14-4 mark, the 4th-seeded St. John Paul II Lions also received a preliminary round bye and will play Saturday, June 6 at 3:00 pm against the winner of (13) Bristol County and (20) Greater New Bedford Voke. Bristol County and Voke will play Friday at 3:30 pm.

The Bourne Canalwomen take the last softball spot for the Cape, as they finished at 8-12 and took the 21st seed in Division 3. Bourne will face Sacred Heart on the road at 3:30 pm tomorrow (Wednesday, June 3).
