Feinstein Weaves Magic on Mound, D-Y Dolphins Clinch Postseason Berth

HARWICH – Only a sophomore, Dennis-Yarmouth’s Sammi Feinstein nevertheless cemented her position as one of the Cape’s premier softball aces Monday afternoon as her Dolphins dispatched Monomoy, 11-2 at Stephen W. Potter Field.

The victory clinched an MIAA South Sectional postseason berth for the 10-1 Dolphin girls.

Feinstein went the distance and allowed only one earned run while striking out eight and affording the host Sharks no walks. She retired the side in succession in five of her seven innings of work, scattered five hits and added her own basehit at the plate as she went 1-4.

But it wasn’t quite as easy as it may have appeared at game’s end as the visiting Dolphins hung tightly to a 2-1 lead until the top of the fifth.

In the fifth frame, the Dolphins exploded for seven runs on a combination of four hits – including a monster triple by backstop Maggie Johnson – and four Monomoy miscues and that was all Feinstein needed to  shut the door.

Johnson ended up going 2-4 on the day with a run scored and a walk while leftfielder Ali Plucinski played a pivotal role with a 2-3 performance to make the bottom of the Dolphin lineup as fearsome as its top. Megan Coyle went 3-5 and scored a pair of runs and leadoff lady Taylor Conley went 2-4. Dennis-Yarmouth eighth grader Abby Higgins continued to impress with a 2-3 day and two runs.

Monomoy fell to 8-6 with loss. The Sharks received hits from Carlee Tolley, Hannah Potter, Sam Barr, Eliza Hawthorne and Cassie Hall.

Abby Sullivan went the distance for the Sharks and took the loss. She went seven innings, struck out four and allowed six earned runs.

The Dolphins welcome a much-improved Barnstable High team on Wednesday (May 13) at 4:00 pm. The Sharks hit the road for Carver Tuesday (May 12).
