SANDWICH — The host Sandwich Blue Knights took a team second place yesterday at the Annual Cape Cod Invitational Wrestling Tournament, while the Barnstable High Red Raiders came in third place out of 12 teams that competed.
Sandwich scored 143.0 points while Barnstable finished with 128.5. Tri-County Regional Voke (Franklin) was crowned tournament champion with 173.5 points.
Five Cape wrestlers were crowned tournament champions and Sandwich High’s Greg Zaw was named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Zaw went 2-0 on the day in the 120-lb. division, defeating Taunton’s Manny Alves by pin (2:40) and Minuteman Tech’s Zack Kreiter by pin in 1:33 in the title bout.
Blue Knights’ 113-pounder Bryon Hopkins took home the title in that weight class with a 3-0 finish on the day. Hopkins defeated Bellingham’s Drake Ditroia (pin/0.00), Boston Latin’s Nelson Wu (pin/0:19) and Boston College High’s Adam Jennings by a 4-0 decision.
Sandwich 145-pounder Matt Landry may have had the most difficult road to the title as he went a perfect 4-0 on the day. Landry pinned all four of his opponents en route to his first place finish. He pinned, in order, Taunton’s Josh Daveiga (2:26), Tri-County Regional’s Mike Almeida (1:55), Everett’s Kevin Santos (0:21) and Boston Latin’s Michael Francis Litto (3:21).
Nauset’s Parker Morris took home the championship title in the 160-lb. division as he, too, went a perfect 3-0 on the day. All of Morris’ victories were by way of the pin. He pinned BC High’s Jake Moore (1:01), Boston Latin’s Joshua Tran (0:33) and Everett’s Donald Yancey (1:36) in succession.
Barnstable High School’s two-time defending Division 1 South Sectional heavyweight Champion Owen Murray — the only Cape wrestler ranked number one in the state — pinned BC High’s Nick Dodge (0:53) and Silver Lake’s David Pettingell (5:21). Murray remains undefeated on the season.
Barnstable also fielded a trio of runner-up wrestlers who took home second place medals from the invitational yesterday. John Goode (132), Charlie McWilliams (152) and Donnie Mach (220) went a combined 6-3 on the day to take home the second place bragging rights. The Red Raiders’ Casey Connor (126) took home a third place finish and had an exceptional day with a 4-1 record.
Sandwich added three third-place finishers to its long list of achievements, including Rob Davison (106) who went 3-1, Spencer Cleary (182) who went 4-1 and Pat Sullivan (195) who went 3-1.
Nauset’s Kyle Cambone (152) took home third place and went 3-1 on the day. He fell to Charlie McWilliams from Barnstable. Jake Colson went 3-1 in the 220-lb. division and took home third place as well. Colson was pinned by Mach in bout #296 in 2:50.
