Former Hyannis GM John Howitt Remembered

cape league logoThe Hyannis Harbor Hawks lost a piece of their heart and soul on Jan. 8 with the passing of John Howitt, who served as general manager for Hyannis from 1999 to 2007. An accomplished engineer and executive who held two original patents on the catalytic converter, Howitt retired to the Cape and quickly poured his considerable talents and energies into the Hyannis organization. His dedication and can-do personality were captured in the 1999 Wall Street Journal article “The Boys of Summer.”

Hyannis reached the Cape Cod Baseball League championship series in Howitt’s second season. His love of great pitching was rewarded in his final two seasons with two Hyannis no-hitters. During John’s nine seasons of stewardship, he helped to stock the roster with 29 future major league players. His leadership and character on and off the field helped spark a resurgence in the franchise that continues even today.

Calling hours are from 5-7 p.m. at Chapman, Cole & Gleason on Route 151 in Mashpee on Friday, Jan. 15. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Unitarian Church, 840 Sandwich Road in Falmouth, followed by a reception.
