Framingham State Sweeps Buccaneers Softball Squad

BUZZARDS BAY — Freshman Anna Dziok (Southampton, Mass.) rapped out six hits and drove in five runs to lead Framingham State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday afternoon by scores of 14-1 in the opener and 25-2 in the nightcap in five inning games played at Alison Rollins Field.

The visiting Rams (13-15, 7-5 MASCAC) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in their first at-bat of the opener, as sophomore Tiffanie Marsh (Tewksbury, Mass.) and freshman Bridget McGrail (Worcester, Mass.) each collected three hits and combined for five RBI. Dziok and sophomore Marissa Flynn (Marlboro, Mass.) had two hits each in the lid-lifter for Framingham State in support of junior Natasha Arseneau (Waltham, Mass.), who struck out 10 in going the distance inside the circle and improving to 7-8 on the season. Freshman Elizabeth Bramhall (Plymouth, Mass.) drove in the lone run of the opener for the host Buccaneers (2-12, 0-12 MASCAC) with an RBI single that plated fellow freshman Alexis Jendzejec (West Greenwich, R.I.), as freshman Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) rapped out two of Massachusetts Maritime’s seven first game hits. Freshman Carli Thomas (Brewster, Mass.) went the distance inside the circle for the hosts, fanning five along the way.

Framingham State jumped out to a 7-0 lead in its first two at-bats of the nightcap before erupting for 14 third inning runs to take control of the contest, as Dziok and freshman Megan Downing (Hanson, Mass.) each had four hits and combined for five RBI for the visitors. Junior Kourtney Kacian (Gardner, Mass.) added three hits and three RBI for the Rams, who received a two-run homer from freshman Dayna Marchant (East Bridgewater, Mass.) as well as two hits and three RBI each from McGrail and sophomores MacKenzie Williams (North Andover, Mass.) and Ashley Lees (Maynard, Mass.) as part of a 21-hit attack. Marsh improved to 6-7 inside the circle by going the distance for the visitors, as she allowed an unearned run while recording a strikeout.

Massachusetts Maritime plated its nightcap runs in the bottom of the third, as Jendzejec doubled home Murphy and later scored on an error. Jendzejec rapped out two of the Buccaneers’ five hits in the second game setback, while Thomas also added a two-bagger for the hosts and recorded a strikeout in two innings pitched.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Chestnut Hill, Mass. on Thursday afternoon to take on Wheelock in a non-league doubleheader that begins at 3:00 p.m., while Framingham State hosts Bridgewater State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference twinbill on Saturday afternoon in Framingham, Mass. beginning at 1:00 p.m.
