NEW LONDON, CT — Massachusetts Maritime Academy senior Sam Hill (Hopkinton, NH) broke his own school record in the 110 meter hurdles and Freshman Malina Dang (Midlothian, VA) broke her own school discus record Saturday afternoon at the Connecticut College Silfen Invitational, while several other Buccaneers added impressive performances.

Hill topped his previous school record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.72 that was good for sixth place in the event, and he added a ninth place time of 59.43 in the 400 hurdles. Senior Zach Poh (Bridgewater) also recorded a pair of top 10 performances for the Buccaneers, as he placed sixth in the discus (37.91 meters/124 feet, 4 inches) and seventh in the shot put (12.32 meters/40 feet, 5 inches), while junior Bryce MacAndrew (Warwick, RI) finished seventh in the hammer throw with a mark of 36.15 meters (118 feet, 7 inches). Freshman Joseph Carey (Pembroke) added a ninth place finish in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 17.44.
All three of Massachusetts Maritime men’s relay teams finished in the top six on the day, as the 4 x 100 relay comprised of Hill, seniors Godfred Mbengam (Randolph) and E.J. Bennett (East Wareham) as well as freshman Ian Chester (Rockland), placed fourth with a time of 45.72. The 4 x 800 relay of senior Anthony Downs (West Roxbury), sophomores Tyler Aldrich (Mashpee) and Andrew Gulino (Attleboro) and freshman Chris MacKay (Bethany, CT) finished fifth with a time of 9:51.44, while the Buccaneer 4 x 400 relay of Hill, Mbengam, sophomore Luke Kurelja (Bloomsburg, PA) and freshman Alan Provost (Monson) was sixth in a time of 3:40.58.
Freshman Malina Dang (Midlothian, VA) broke her own school record in the women’s discus for Massachusetts Maritime, as she posted a mark of 29.97 meters (98 feet, 4 inches) while finishing seventh in the event. Freshman Jessica Gratzer (Pembroke) recorded a seventh place finish in the javelin (31.48 meters/103 feet, 3 inches) and a ninth place performance in the shot put (10.29 meters/33 feet, 9 ¼ inches) for the Buccaneers, who also received a ninth place finish from sophomore Meaghan Bain (Hanson) in the javelin (30.57 meters/100 feet, 3 inches).
Massachusetts Maritime finished ninth in the final men’s standings and 14th overall in the women’s team competition, as Tufts and Worcester State finished as the champion and runner-up in both final standings on the afternoon.
Massachusetts Maritime heads to Mansfield, Conn. next Friday morning to compete at the Eastern Connecticut Invitational that begins at 10:00 am.
