Lady Lions Edged by Old Rochester Laxwomen

WEST YARMOUTH – In spite of hat tricks scored by both Mikenzie Carbone and Casey Sullivan, the gutsy St. John Paul II girls’ lacrosse team fell Tuesday morning, 9-8, to the visiting Old Rochester Bulldogs at the Sandy Pond Recreation Complex.

The Lady Lions played the entire game with just one substitute player and received a spectacular game between the pipes from Lily Almquist who registered 12 saves on 21 shots on goal. More than half of the St. John Paul II varsity squad was absent due to April school vacation.

St. John Paul II (3-4) was up by one at halftime and the Lady Lions and Bulldogs traded goals back and forth throughout the second half but with two minutes left in the game Old Rochester went ahead, 9-8.

“(They) killed the clock by successfully stalling the ball,” said St. John Paul II head coach Mike Sullivan. “(It was) our best game of the season defensively as a team even though we came up short handed.”

Lions’ freshmen Kyra McCabe and Maya Patterson each added one marker for the hosts.

Sophomore Jessica Tierney, who normally anchors the Lady Lions’ front line attack, “shined in a defensive role today,” Coach Sullivan added. “It was a really good game to build off of.”

The Lady Lions hope to get back to .500 on Thursday (April 23) when the Nauset Warriors visit at 11:00 am.
