Mass. Maritime Lacrosse Teams Take Pair of Losses

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. — Junior Jackie Connors (Ashland, Mass.) netted four goals and an assist for five points to lead Worcester State to a 17-9 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

lead at the break, and Worcester State tallied four of the opening five markers (including two by Connors) after intermission to take a 12-6 edge with just over 22 minutes remaining. The host Buccaneers (5-8, 1-5 MASCAC) closed back to within six at 14-8 on junior Molly Smith’s (Westwood, Mass.) goal with 15:05 to play, but the Lancers scored three of the contest’s final four goals to ice their triumph.

Junior Kalia Chase (Northbridge, Mass.) added a hat trick and an assist on the night for Worcester State, which also received a pair of goals and a helper from sophomore Alaina Martin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) as well as a pair of markers each off the sticks of seniors Jackie Lawlor (Westford, Mass.) and Molly Kilday (Westford, Mass.) as well as freshman Mackenzie Little (Marlboro, Mass.). Senior Angela Grassetti (Feeding Hills, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Lancers, who also received a tally and helper from freshman Alexis Vecchiarelli (Agawam, Mass.) and a single assist from sophomore Angelina Sutherland (Tyngsboro, Mass.).

Freshman Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.) netted four goals and an assist for five points in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a hat trick and helper from Smith to go with single tallies off the sticks of sophomores Ashley Solari (Sandwich, Mass.) and Stephanie O’Connor (Westwood, Mass.). Sophomore Lea Robichaud (Holden, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with three saves over the first 51-plus minutes of play for Worcester State, which also received a stop over the final 8:36 from sophomore Krissy Pessa (Walpole, Mass.). Freshman Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) made 15 saves in the setback for the Buccaneers, as the Lancers outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 39-14 margin and held a 22-6 advantage in draw controls for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Fitchburg, Mass. on Friday evening to take on Fitchburg State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing that begins at 6:00 p.m., while Worcester State hosts Bridgewater State in a MASCAC match on Saturday afternoon in Worcester, Mass. beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Mass. Maritime Men Fall, 14-5, to US Coast Guard Academy

NEW LONDON, CT — Junior Louis DePaolis (Westchester, N.Y.) netted a hat trick and an assist for four points to lead Coast Guard to a 14-5 New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening at Cadet Memorial Field.

The host Bears (4-9, 2-4 NEWMAC) raced out to a 5-0 lead just 8:04 into the contest before the visiting Buccaneers (6-9, 1-5 NEWMAC) responded with four unanswered tallies of their own, including two off the stick of freshman Keaghan Bartley (Richmond, Va.), to close back to within one with 2:15 to play in the half. Sophomore Blaise Curtis (Riverside, Md.) extended Coast Guard’s lead to 6-4 at the break with a tally that came with 1:11 remaining before intermission, and the Bears took control of the contest by netting all five third quarter markers (including two by DePaolis) as part of a six-goal run to ice their triumph in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Sophomore Quinn Hathcock (Yarmouth, Maine) joined DePaolis with a hat trick in the win for Coast Guard, which also received a pair of goals and an assist from Curtis as well as two tallies from freshman Matt Huemme (Sherborn, Mass.). Senior Pat Dreiss (Wantagh, N.Y.) and junior Justin Huemme (Sherborn, Mass.) each chipped in with a marker and helper for the Bears, who also received goals from junior Robert McKenna (Chesapeake, Va.) and freshman Alec Groff (Willow Street, Pa.) as well as an assist off the stick of senior Nick Chicoine (Massapequa, N.Y.).

Junior Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.), sophomore Joseph Landy (Chatham, N.J.) and freshman Robert Steinweg (Arnold, Md.) added goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received an assist from sophomore Conor Greaney (Milton, Mass.). Freshman Kurt Caminske (Sayville, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for Coast Guard with an eight-save effort, while junior James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.) made 11 stops in net for the Buccaneers as the Bears outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 43-30 margin for the match.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Norton, Mass. on Saturday evening to take on Wheaton in a New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference match that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Coast Guard hosts Babson in a NEWMAC outing on Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
