McWilliams, Murray and Connor Go Unbeaten at Marshfield

MARSHFIELD — It’s enough wrestling in one day to make even a diehard fanatic grow tired by day’s end.

But when the dust settled yesterday at the Annual Marshfield Holiday Tournament, six Cape wrestlers went home undefeated. Three were from Barnstable, two of whom are team captains, and three were from Sandwich.

Red Raider co-captain Charlie McWilliams led the pack by going 3-0 on the day in the 152-lb. division, defeating Stephen Zenke of Hanover High School in the first round by pin. McWilliams then defeated Nauset’s Kyle Cambone by pin and Ben Hirtle of Hingham High School by pin. Red Raider heavyweight and co-captain Owen Murray lived up to the hype by beating Matt Irving of Plymouth South High School by pin in the second round (Murray received a bye in the first round). He followed that with a stellar pin of New Bedford’s Dylan Alexandre at just 1:08 of the bout. Murray returns today for the semifinals to face Duxbury High School’s Matt Boyle.

Barnstable junior Casey Connor continued his unbeaten streak in the 126-lb. division when he took down Sharon High School’s Tyler Jensen by major decision followed with an 8-6 decision over Hingham High’s Joe Lindsay. Connor returns today to face Michael Dik of St. John’s Prep. Sandwich’s Matt Landry (152/2-0), Bryon Hopkins (113/2-0) and Greg Zaw (120/2-0) also returned today for a shot at a tournament title in their respective weight classes.

Other Barnstable wrestlers who took home victories included 220-pounder Donnie Mach, also a senior co-captain. Mach went 2-1 on the day and returns today for the consolation quarterfinals. Mach defeated the Sandwich Blue Knights’ big man, Caleb White, by pin at 0:45 and then Hingham’s Michael Calvi by pin at 3:14. Mach then fell into the consolation bracket when Ian Butterbrodt of St. John’s Prep defeated him by pin at 3:43.

Barnstable High sophomore John Goode also went 2-1 on the day, but both of his wins came on the back end of a second round loss (Goode received a first round bye) to Hanover High’s Damien Galotti by pin at 3:11. The 106-pounder then pulled himself up by his bootstraps and defeated Alex Mowry of Toll Gate High School by pin (3:37) and Wyatt Dominquez of Cohasset by decision. Goode will return today to face Sharon High’s Luke Stillman in the consolation quarterfinals.

Nauset’s Kyle Cambone will return as well today for the consolation quarterfinals after a 2-1 performance on the mats. Cambone will face Ryan Collins of St. John’s Prep. The 152-pounder lost to the aformentioned McWilliams, then defeated Andrew Bumpus of Carver High by major decision and Erik Dempsey of Plymouth North High School by a 13-5 major decision. Nauset’s Parker Morris had a fantastic showing for the day, going 2-1 overall and will return today for the consolation quarterfinals to face Jack Hayes of Cumberland, Rhode Island in the 160-pound division.

Morris defeated Sandwich High’s Nate Fistori by pin (3:07), Somerset’s Mitch Prario by pin (5:57) and Carver’s John Perry by pin (0:16) before falling to Marshfield’s Mike Rodrigues by pin.

Nauset’s Jake Colson went 1-1 on the day, defeating Toll Gate High School’s Cameron Vickers by injury default, but then lost to Somerset’s Drew Gagnon by a 5-3 decision.

Other Cape wrestlers who took home wins included Barnstable’s Vinny Ciliberto (138-lbs./2-2), Liam Shields (160-lbs./1-2), Alex Lopes (170-lbs./2-2), Michael Bertucci (195-lbs./1-2) and Nauset’s Levane Harrington (195-lbs./1-2).

Sandwich Blue Knights’ 152-pounder Matt Landry went 2-0 yesterday and defeated Colin Fiske this morning to advance to the championship final versus Barnstable’s McWilliams.
