Red Raider Girls Win Second Straight with 15-hit Attack

HYANNIS – Perhaps buoyed by their first win Monday, the Barnstable High softball team (2-3) took its second straight with a 7-4 victory over the visiting Sandwich High Lady Knights Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore pitcher Kristen Stephani notched her second victory with the complete-game effort, while her teammates hammered out 15 hits including a solo home run shot by catcher

Jaime Corey in the bottom of the fourth inning that would ultimately prove to be a key insurance run.

Leftfielder Sara Higgins led the hit parade with a 4-4 day at the plate, while shortstop Ashlie Curtiss went 3-4. Shannon Kennedy-Cabral added to the attack with a 2-4 day and two RBI, while third baseman Cassidy Lariviere also went 2-4 with one RBI.

“(The) offense (is) finally clicking,” said head coach Martha Deusser. “(I’m) so excited and proud of our players.”

Sandwich (1-4) got on the scoreboard first in the first inning when Blue Knight first baseman Kelley Fitzgerald led off with a walk, stole second and third base and then came home on a ground-out by 8th grade pitcher Rahne Turley for a 1-0 lead.

Barnstable retaliated in the bottom half of the inning to make it 1-1 when Danielle Curtin singled and then scored on Lariviere’s RBI-basehit.

The Red Raiders went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning after Alyssa Kuehne (2-4) reached on an error and then advanced on a Curtiss basehit, then scored on a ground-out by Kennedy-Cabral.

Fitzgerald scored again in the top of the third frame after being issued another walk, but then the Red Raiders opened things up in the bottom of the third with a three-run rally. Corey reached on an error, Higgins ripped a hit and then Mia Crawley (1-4, 2 RBI) drove in Corey for a 3-2 lead. Hits followed in that frame from Kuehne, Curtiss and Kennedy-Cabral to open it up for the hosts to a 5-2 lead.

The Blue Knights came to within 5-4 with one run each in the fourth and fifth innings, but Barnstable held the visitors at bay, defensively, while tacking on a run on Corey’s blast and another in the sixth when Lariviere scored after leading off with a baseknock.

Barnstable next faces Nauset on the road on Monday (April 27) at 4:00 pm, while Sandwich is slated to face St. John Paul II on Monday at home at 4:00 and then Dennis-Yarmouth next Wednesday (April 29) at home at 4:00 pm in an Atlantic Coast League match-up.
