Sandwich Blue Knights Notch First Win Of Season

EAST SANDWICH — Plans don’t always work out just the way you want them to.

Standing at an even .500 on the still young season at 2-2, the Barnstable High School girls basketball team went down to Quaker Meetinghouse Road last night to face an 0-2 Sandwich

team hoping to disrupt everything and anything the hosts brought at them.

Barnstable almost pulled it off, but the Blue Knights (1-2) did not waver and captured their first win of the season, 38-26.

At a height advantage with Carly Whittle and Kay Stanton, Sandwich did not entirely succumb to Barnstable’s plans to run a full-court press defense at the outset and then shift into man-to-man. Instead, the Blue Knights adapted and switched out of their man-to-man defense into a zone set-up and in so doing pretty much eliminated the visitors’ hopes of penetrating the paint. Whittle finished the night with a double-double, 14 points and 12 rebounds.

“We just wanted to put pressure on their guards and get some turnovers,” head coach Vanessa Cedrone said. “Which we did… it (the game) was a lot closer than it (the final score) indicated.”

While Sandwich ended the first half on top, 14-13, Barnstable took some steam heading into the halftime intermission when Angela MacLeod buried a three-pointer with just over a minute to play. Still, Sandwich would not relinquish the lead and was backed chiefly by Whittle’s 14 points and 12 points from Stanton, who both, Cedrone admitted, clearly dominated the boards.

Barnstable came within two points in the third quarter and six points with just over three minutes left to play in the game but could not bridge the gap entirely.

Red Raider 8th grade center Carly Whiteside led Barnstable with 13 points and MacLeod finished with six points.

Sandwich hopes to even its record Monday night when it hits the road to face Plymouth North. Barnstable faces Nauset at home on Saturday (Dec. 27) at 3:00 pm.
