Tempers Flare at Pro Boxing Weigh-Ins, Bouts Set For Tonight

HYANNIS — Trader Ed’s was abuzz Friday night during the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission official weigh-ins and testosterone was elevated as tempers flared between the two heavyweight contenders on tonight’s much-anticipated fight card.

Hyannis native and heavyweight contender Jesse Barboza (9-1-1, 5 KOs) got into a scuffle during the weigh-in Friday afternoon with Pennsylvania’s Jesse Oltmanns (10-5, 7 KOs), as the pair will be the featured bout tonight at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center. Barboza and Oltmanns will be competing for the Northeast Heavyweight Championship crown.

The official weigh-ins yesterday afternoon were highlighted by the brief scuffle between Barboza and Oltmanns while the two were standing on the scale. Both title challengers were nose to nose and shoves were exchanged before officials quickly separated them.

Barboza is a former Red Raider football star and was a co-captain of the 2003 Barnstable High Squad.

Also on tonight’s fight card is Harwich native Paul Gonsalves (7-7-1, 3 KO’s) who is scheduled to face off in an eight-round light heavyweight fight against Mexico’s Rafael Valenzuela (8-5, 1 KO). Pembroke’s Vinnie Carita (9-1-1, 9 KO’s) will take on Jose Humberto Corral (18-18, 12 KO’s) and two additional four-round fights on the undercard.

Tonight’s bouts will also feature special guest appearances from former pro boxer and trainer and Barnstable High stalwart athlete George Maddox, also a Hyannis native, and the legendary Tony “Fleet Street Fury” Demarco.

NORTHEAST HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE – Jesse Barboza (248.0) vs. Jesse Otlmanns (216.5)

CRUISERWEIGHTS – Vinnie Carita (189.5) vs. Jose Humberto Corral (195.0)

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS – Paul Gonsalves (177.0) vs. Rafael Valenzuela (179.0)

MIDDLEWEIGHTS – Tolan Tascoe (156.0) vs. Lionel Young (157.0)

WELTERWEIGHTS – Malik Jackson (147.0) vs. Oscar Diaz (147.5)
