ORLEANS – Orleans Police and Orleans Fire-Rescue were dispatched to the intersection of 73 Main Street at Route 28 for a reported car into the Orleans United Methodist Church with unknown injuries. Upon arrival, first responders found that a Lexus ES300 sedan had driven off the roadway into the corner of the church with airbag deployment and significant front-end damage to the car.

Initial size-up by fire crews determined two parties were  trapped in the vehicle requiring extrication. One of the victims was an elderly female suffering serious lower extremity injuries, prompting a call for MedFlight. A mutual-aid ambulance was requested from Eastham and both parties were extricated from the vehicle. The female with serious injuries was transported to Barnstable Municipal Airport to meet the helicopter for transport to a Boston area trauma center. The other injured party was transported by the Eastham ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital.

Traffic was slowed until the vehicle could be cleared from the scene. An Orleans Building inspector was called to assess the damage to the church. The crash is under investigation by the Orleans Police Department.
