Family dog alerts homeowners to garage fire in Nantucket

NANTUCKET – At 2:16 am Public Safety Dispatch received a report of a building fire at 90 Skyline Drive. Statements from the owners reported that their dog woke them, and on checking the house, a fire was found in the attached garage. The owner kept the door to the garage closed containing the fire to that area and evacuated the family from the home. Nantucket Fire Department personnel arrived on scene finding heavy smoke coming from the garage. A hose line was used by the engine crew to extinguish the fire. The fire was contained to the garage area in parts to the actions of the homeowner keeping the garage door shut and the quick actions of the fire department personnel. Firefighters remained on scene preforming overhaul operations, removing smoke from the main house and assuring fire had not spread in the garage.

Damage to the home’s garage and property loss is estimated at approximately $90,000.

Fire department personnel cleared the scene by 3:40AM. Units on scene; E1, E3, Ambulance 4, Tanker 2, C1 and C2 for a total of 12 NFD members.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental and still under investigation.
