Oak Bluffs Police arrest fugitive wanted in Maine

OAK BLUFFS – Oak Bluffs Police arrested a man who was a wanted fugitive from Maine on Wednesday.

They received information from the State of Maine Department of Corrections Probation Department regarding Eric Charles Olson, 44, who was possibly living and working on the  island.

Olson was wanted on two outstanding extraditable probation arrest warrants from the State of Maine. The warrants were associated with the crimes of theft of services, theft by deception, forgery and theft by unauthorized taking or transfer.

It was reported to the Oak Bluffs Police that Olson may have been using a family member’s identity to evade being arrested on his warrants.

In addition to the warrants from Maine, it was determined that Olson allegedly had an outstanding warrant for the crime of larceny from a building out of the Brookline District Court and his right to operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts was suspended.

Detectives from Oak Bluffs and Edgartown began investigating Olson and were able to learn the vehicle he has been regularly operating, in addition to where he was living.

Just after 12 p.m., Oak Bluffs Police located the vehicle Olson has been operating in a driveway on Wachuset Ave.

Approximately 5 minutes later Oak Bluffs and Edgartown Detectives and an Oak Bluffs Patrol Officer attempted to initiate a motor vehicle stop with Olson operating the vehicle on Barnes Road, however Olson refused to stop despite the activation of emergency lights and sirens.

Officers pursued Olson the length of Barnes Road southbound into the Town of Edgartown. Olson eventually came to a stop at the intersection of Barnes Road and West Tisbury Road with the assistance of the Edgartown Police. Officers assisted Olson out of the vehicle and placed him under arrest. He was transported to the Dukes County Jail for booking procedures.

In addition to the outstanding warrants, Olson will be charged in the Edgartown District Court related to this incident on the charges of:
fugitive from justice, failure to stop for the police, operating a motor vehicle after license suspension, driving to endanger and resisting arrest.

Olson is currently being held at the Dukes County Jail without bail.
