Meghan Trainor is “All About That Bass”

Nantucket born Meghan Trainor entered the international music scene in earnest this summer with her hit song, “All About That Bass.” Growing up in a household with musical influences from both parents, Trainor fell in love with music at an early age and started writing songs at age 11, according to an interview she did with CapeCod.com’s Sean Doherty earlier this summer.

“I miss Cape Cod,” Trainor, now 20, said in the interview.

A couple of years after writing those first songs, she started producing her own songs on her computer. She is skilled with numerous musical instruments, including ukulele, keyboards, trumpet and guitar.

Trainor’s family moved from Nantucket to Cape Cod and Trainor and her two brothers attended Nauset Regional High School in North Eastham.

While in high school she continued to write songs and she credits 50s era music, artists like Frank Sinatra and Soca, a style of Caribbean music, as influencing her own hip hop, pop musical blend.

“All About That Bass” embodies the idea of female empowerment with a “feel good” attitude, and Trainor mixes her musical influences in to an upbeat, modern track that has elements from the past.

Her influences, she said, are Bruno Mars, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind & Fire.

The song has enjoyed national and international success, charting No 2 Single in the US; No 1 Single in Australia, Denmark, Canada and New Zealand; and breaking the top 20 in other countries, according to Billboard Magazine.

Trainor said she was producing and releasing albums while still a teenager. She produced and released her albums “Only 17,” and “I’ll Sing With You” in 2011 at age 17.  With early success and lots of promise, she headed to Nashville.  During her stay in Nashville, she said, she wrote for artists like Rascal Flats and met producer Kevin Kadish, with whom she co-wrote “All About That Bass.”

She said she tried to pitch it to other artists with no success, so she decided to release it herself, she told Doherty.

After she was heard singing the song herself, she was signed by Epic Records.

The music video to “All About That Bass” was directed by Fatima Robinson, who has worked with major artists like Michael Jackson and Black Eyed Peas.

“They brought in the best of the best,” Trainor said, adding, “I can’t dance. She made me a rock star in two days.”

Megan Trainor will release her EP “Title,” featuring hit track “All About That Bass,” on September 9, 2014.  She said she is working on a complete album, “to prove I’m not a one-hit wonder.”
