AAA Projects Record-Breaking Holiday Travel Nationwide, Including Massachusetts

HYANNIS – AAA Northeast is anticipating that more than 103 million Americans will travel for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, which represents a 1.5 percent increase from last year.

In Massachusetts, more than 2 million travelers are expected, an increase of 2.6 percent, and a number of factors including additional consumer spending, lower gas prices, and increased consumer optimism.

“The current Massachusetts average price of $2.17 for gasoline is the same as it was in mid-May, so motorists are unlikely to make price a factor when deciding how far to drive,” said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast Director of Public and Legislative Affairs.

With more traffic on the roadways, AAA is also encouraging motorists to inspect vehicles before hitting the road.

“That means checking your tires, checking your wiper blades, making sure you’ve got windshield wiper fluid in the car, and an emergency kit with a set of jumper cables,” Maguire said.
