BARNSTABLE – After the success of the Hockey East championship tournament last weekend in Hyannis, Barnstable town officials and members of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce are looking out for more sports-related events.
The chamber has announced plans to bring the U.S. Figure Skating Theater on Ice Competition to Hyannis in June for the first time since April 2o11.
The competition runs from June 17-22 at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center.
According to Patti Lloyd, Vice-President of Sales at the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, the competition brought in $1.5 million to the Cape’s economy in 2011 and this year they’re expecting it to bring in around $2 million.
Community leaders say they want to bring in more business to the community from October to June.
Lloyd says the chamber is getting good feedback from event organizers. She said event organizers are looking for a number of traits in a possible host town, including the destination, facilities available, accessibility and quality of hotels.
Lloyd said that visitors enjoy their time on the Cape. “They love it here, they love the Cape,” said Lloyd. “Sometimes accessibility isn’t easy with traffic in the summer, but winter they love coming here because there’s no traffic.”
