Cape Downwinders Not Pleased With NRC Oversight of Pilgrim Nuclear Plant

nuclearPLYMOUTH – Diane Turco with the Cape Downwinders is expressing her concern with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) after what she says is a ‘fatally flawed assessment’ of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth.

NRC officials held their annual meeting to discuss the plant on Wednesday.

Turco says that the NRC gave Entergy Corp. a failing grade, and so she asked the NRC why they have not ordered a shutdown of the plant.

Turco said, “NRC response was we need to have more safety problems before we shut down and we said what are you waiting for, an accident to happen?”

Turco believes that Entergy cannot be trusted to comply with the recommendations.

“We feel that the intervention is fatally flawed assumption that Entergy will follow through with their recommendations,” said Turco. “They didn’t comply in 2014, why do they expect they’ll comply in 2015?”

Turco adds that she does not think NRC oversight over Pilgrim makes much of a difference.
