The Hanson family of Marstons Mills has been named a Hero Family for their fundraising for cancer research.
MARSTONS MILLS – A Marstons Mills family has been chosen to be the Hero Family of Massachusetts for the nonprofit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.
The nonprofit is dedicated to finding cures for children’s cancer.
Sean Hanson, 12, has been a cancer survivor for 11 years.
His mother, Ellen Hanson, said anyone can help to raise money during the fundraiser Alex’s Lemonade Days from June 12 to the 14.
“Anyone can have a lemonade stand,” she said. “It can be big or small and all the money goes to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation which is working for families and a cure.”
Ellen Hanson said the family’s job as a representative is to get the word out about Alex’s Lemonade Days.
“Increased awareness is increased funding for a cure,” she said. “And childhood cancer is grossly underfunded and you see a lot of grass roots organizations and parants that are trying to raise the money.”
The Hanson family will be running a lemonade stand on June 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Joyce Landscaping on Flint Street in Marstons Mills.
Sean, who is one of a set of triplets, was born prematurely in 2002 and a large mass, later diagnosed as stage 3 neuroblastoma, was discovered.
He underwent two surgeries along with chemotherapy and is now a healthy 12-year-old.
“I had cancer, they took it out, and now I’m all better,” he used to say.
