MASHPEE – Mashpee Middle-High School will hold a forum, “In Support of Our Children,” this evening beginning at 6 p.m.
The hour-and-a-half event on Tuesday, May 5, will feature guest speakers that will inform parents on a number of topics including drugs and alcohol, the use of drug dogs in school, the impacts of social media, and social liability law.
The guest speakers include Gosnold of Cape Cod Executive Director Ray Tamasi, Barnstable County Sheriff James Cummings, Chris Santos from Mashpee Cares and the Sheriff’s department’s Shaun Cahill will discuss social media issues.
The schools headmaster Kevin Turner says it takes more than just reaching out to children.
“It’s incredibly important we reach out to parents as well because one of the topics Ray Tamasi will talk about is that the first time somebody overdoses on heroin, it’s not the first time they have done something illegal,” Turner said. “So it starts with alcohol. It starts with marijuana. It starts somewhere.”
Turner said the goal is to have students make the right choices.
“The more information we can give to parents, we can have that conversation within the schools. We can really support our kids to make good decisions,” he said.
The 90-minute forum will be full of useful information and cover a number of topics, according to Turner.
“It’s a jam-packed agenda, but we think it’s important,” he said. “We ask our parents to do so many things. This is just one night that we hope will contain a lot of precious information for them to gather.”
