State Rep Pushes Bill on Massage Licensing

Brian MannalHYANNIS – State Representative Brian Mannal (D-Centerville) is hoping the bill he introduced in the legislature last year will help to eliminate houses of prostitution that pose as massage parlors.

“This is an issue that has come about in the last few years,” he said. He said a constituent brought it to his attention last year and that is why he filed the bill.

Mannal’s bill which is stalled in the legislature would prohibit unlicensed people from advertising massage services online. It would update the current statute which just specifies print advertising.

Last Friday, Barnstable Police raided four businesses they believe are fronts for prostitution. The raid did not result in any arrests. It was a team effort involving federal, state and local agencies.

The businesses were closed down for lack of proper licenses.

Mannal said his bill would help authorities enforce the law. He said in the case of last week’s raid it looks like a case of human trafficking in addition to prostitution.

Barnstable police say they will continue to monitor the businesses raided last week.
