Dennis & Yarmouth Settle School Battle; Approve New Regional Agreement

YARMOUTH – After years of bickering over how to fund their regional school district, the towns of Dennis and Yarmouth on Tuesday each passed a new regional agreement at their respective town meetings.

Approval of the new deal means Dennis will pick up a larger share of the total school budget under a new formula for dividing costs.

The revised agreement will divide the amount each town pays based on the foundation method, which includes students from each town that attend classes in another district. The current formula splits the cost based on how many students each town sent to the district.

The deal reached on Tuesday will also help pave the way for construction of a new middle school for the district that will replace the Mattachesse Middle School.

For years, the two towns have battled over the budget, leading to lawsuits and a chasm between the communities that at time pitted friends against each other.

The articles passed easily in both Dennis and Yarmouth.

In other action at Yarmouth’s Town Meeting, voters approved spending more than $16 million for a new Department of Public Works Building. It will still need final approval at the town election on November 5.

A ban on the sale of plastic bottles on town property was also approved
