FALMOUTH –  More than 25 members of the Falmouth police department have been looking a bit shaggy over the past several weeks.

But it was all for a good cause that was celebrated Monday as the “Growvember” campaign came to an end.

The officers were growing beards and collecting donations for Children’s Cove, a local agency which helps children who are victims of abuse.

Money was also raised for Carriage House in North Falmouth, a shelter for women and their children.

The “Growvember” effort collected $1,400, which was matched by the Falmouth Police Patrolman’s Federation. Officers made personal donations and also collected money from Falmouth residents who asked about their hairy complexion.

Falmouth officers are normally prohibited from growing beards by department regulations, but Chief Ed Dunne allowed for an exception during the fundraiser.

“It really is a very easy decision because when they approached me to do this, it’s all for a worthy cause,” said Dunne.

And officers who have grown accustomed to the extra facial hair have been given an extra month before they have to take out the razor.
