Barnes Custom Builders is a local design, build and renovation company, whose primary focus is on kitchens and baths, and older-home renovations, according to owner Charlie Barnes. It’s important for the team at Barnes to make sure the client and the project managers have open communication every step of the way.
“We have a lot of customers who are ‘satellite’ customers, meaning they live out of the area but own a second home on the Cape,” Barnes said. To make projects convenient not only for the clients but also for the team at Barnes, they provide an app that shows the client the progress of a project, schedules, photos, budgets, selections and more. “It’s pretty transparent,” Barnes said, and clients appreciate that.
There are some specific exterior building products Barnes Custom Builders recommends to protect homes against harsh Cape weather conditions, such as Marvin or Pella windows, cedar shakes, PVC trim, and more. Barnes added that some of these products would not be used on a historical home, due to specific regulations that are always adhered to.
Barnes’ partner, Dave Medeiros, said they’re seeing a lot of changing trends to the interior of the home. “We’re seeing people move away from natural woods more lately and going more for the man-made materials, mostly due to their low maintenance. Storage in bathrooms is always on their clients’ wish lists, as well as standing showers and soaking tubs.”
Medeiros added that Barnes has long experience with navigating the building codes and regulations that are particular to the different town in the Cape, including historic and conservation areas, and this allows their clients to rest assured that Barnes Custom Builders is handling all of it.
“One of the areas where we provide value to our clients is eliminating that headache and frustration from their lives (in regard to permitting). They can rely on one group, one outfit, to manage and keep the design project on track and on budget to get through the permitting process,” said Medeiros.
