Deceased whale washes ashore on Nantucket

NANTUCKET – A 50-foot deceased whale has washed ashore on a local beach.

The members of Marine Mammal Alliance Nantucket anchored the deceased sperm whale in place on the island’s north shore, with plans to move it to an undisclosed location for a necropsy.

Heavy machinery will be needed, but weather has delayed the effort.

New England Aquarium and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials are expected to join the effort Tuesday.

The last time a whale washed ashore on Nantucket was in 2002.
