SANDWICH – A Sandwich resident is the winner of an ultramarathon in Antarctica.
Gretchen Swarr, a research association with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, won the Antarctic Ice Ultra 50k, finishing in 6 hours, 56 minutes, and 31 seconds.
It was her first ultramarathon, having completed all six world marathon majors.
She trained on Cape Cod trails, and trained for cold adaptation testing gear in the walk-in freezer at WHOI.
