FALMOUTH – A Cape Cod Research institution has received some lofty recognition from an international organization – again.

For the third year in a row, the International Center for Climate Governance has ranked the Woods Hole Research Center as the world’s number one climate change think tank.

The research center has been studying the role land-based carbon reservoirs have played in climate change, especially in tropical forests and artic permafrost.

The current priorities of the center include removing CO2 from the atmosphere by restoring degraded lands and using satellite remote sensing and other methods to measure land-based emissions of CO2 from activities like deforestation.

The International Center for Climate Governance said its climate think tank ranking is an authoritative assessment of the institutions working in the field of climate change economics and policy.

The rankings are based on an institution’s activities, publications and dissemination.

This year they analyzed 240 independent think tanks.

Massachusetts had a strong showing in the rankings as the Union of Concerned Scientists in Cambridge finished in second.
