NORTH FALMOUTH – Community leaders in North Falmouth celebrated the new YMCA Early Childhood Education Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday.

The center is housed at the North Falmouth Congregational Church, and is the result of a collaboration between church officials and the YMCA.

“We’ve been looking at ways to use our building to look at ways we can meet the needs in this community,” said Rev. Fred Meade of the North Falmouth Congregational Church. “We stepped out of our comfort zone and opened [the church] up to a new way and I have the joy of seeing children now every day. It’s wonderful”

Officials spoke about the importance and growing need for affordable childcare locally. A recent YMCA needs assessment found affordable childcare was the second biggest need in North Falmouth, behind a community pool.

“Providing affordable childcare was certainly something we could do right away as long as we found some great collaborating partners like the church,” said Stacie Peugh, the President and CEO of the YMCA of Cape Cod.

Falmouth Chamber of Commerce President Michael Kasparian said it is crucial for the local economy to have affordable childcare.

“Part of the mission of the YMCA with this daycare center is to provide safe and affordable daycare, which has tremendous positive impact on the community because it allows young families to stay here, work here, grow their families. It just gives back to the community in so many ways.”

The center officially opened in February and two additional classrooms are already under construction.  The program is enrolling children in need of full-day infant, toddler and preschool child care.

The church is located at 115 Old Main Road and parents interested in a tour can call 508-564-1718.

The center is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care.
