Heading into this week as one of just a handful of Cape team’s in all sports that are still undefeated, Mike Tierney’s St. John Paul II girls basketball team has proven it can run and gun with the best of them. There are two very tall reasons for that early success: Kaia and Haley Whiteley, this week’s capecod.com Athletes of the Week. Kaia, a senior forward, recorded a game-changing double-double versus the host Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins during the Stripes Tournament late last week, pouring in a game-high 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds, while her twin-sister and St. John Paul II Lions senior captain Haley Whiteley had 10 points to go along with 7 rebounds in the low-scoring, 43-29 win. Both girls have been perennial all-stars on the Lions’ parquet, but this year it may seem more like their speed in the transition game and ability to own the paint is reaping dividends for the Blue & Gold. Tack on that Kaia is equally an outside threat beyond the arc and you have the makings of a possible championship bid come March. This week’s honorable mention Capecod.com Athlete of the Week: Dennis-Yarmouth’s boys basketball senior captain LK Metz who poured in 25 points including 15-20 from the free-throw line in a major upset over Barnstable.
