Homeowner’s Headquarters: A Discussion with Moniz Home Improvement, Inc. on Home Renovation

Welcome to Homeowner’s Headquarters, brought to you by the good folks at Mid-Cape Home Centers.

Each week, we will have a discussion with a builder on Cape Cod to talk about what they do, where to find them and the processes involved. Listen to our chat below, read the article and check out more information on Moniz Home Improvement, Inc.

Nicole and Ken Moniz, of Moniz Home Improvement, have had roots in the community going back decades. When Ken Moniz was growing up on Cape Cod, he had already decided that he wanted to build quality homes that not only reflect the creative concepts of those who live in them, but which also embody the feel of this beloved locale.

That vision became Ken’s passion, and is the heart of Moniz Home Improvement, Inc.

“We specialize in door replacements, windows, siding, decks, and mainly, since people like the open concept, we’re in the main structure, removing walls and installing laminated beams,” Ken said. “Especially when people want to remodel their kitchen from the 70s – that’s when they want it wide open.” The purpose of doing this, in most cases, he said, is to create a flow and to have that open space for entertaining.

Unless you’re restoring an old captain’s house for historical purposes, the Moniz Home Improvement finds that most clients want to improve their Cape homes, and have an out-with-the-old, in-with-the-new viewpoint when it comes to remodeling.

Ken, who is, by all accounts, a rehab specialist in his industry, said it’s his job to identify problems in the home, such as any safety hazards, leaks in the roof or windows, structural issues like moisture in crawl spaces that may lead to floor replacements, etc. Between the floor joists and the ceiling rafters, Ken said, are where the most common problem areas of a home, especially in older buildings.

He’s also finding that some clients prefer to use reclaimed woods for details of the home. He’s had clients who wanted to create mantels out of bedposts and bed frames.

“Our customer service, and our communication and response time,” are what clients value the most, according to Nicole. “There are a lot of times when Ken will go out and initially meet with a client, and one of the first things out of their mouth is, ‘I can’t tell you how many times a contractor did not contact us. Your communication is second to none.’”

Nicole added that, at Moniz Home Improvement, they really pride themselves on trust because, “Let’s face it,” she said, “a lot of homeowners have had a really bad experience with contractors.” Moniz will guide the clients every step of the way, and constantly keep open that door of communication.

Many clients are not necessarily here on the Cape, she added. “So, to constantly streamline that process and send them updates, send them project pictures… it’s like they’re right here on the Cape, watching the process unfold.”
