Backfire from motorcycle mistaken as gunfire sparking large police response in Harwich

HARWICH
– Harwich Police report that on Tuesday at approximately 9:30 PM, a 911 caller to the Massachusetts State Police reported that there was a domestic occurring at a residence on Long Pond Drive in Harwich. The caller reported that there were knives and a gun involved. The caller then reported that there were shots fired.

Patrol Sergeant Aram Goshgarian and Patrol Officers Jim Connery, Tom Griffiths, and Ron Ruggiero responded to the scene and encountered a subject running towards the residence. That subject was detained and information was obtained that there were additional people inside the residence. Officers established contact with the occupants of the residence and began to order them outside.

One of the occupants came to the door and then refused the commands of the officers. He went back inside the house and locked the door. At that time the Cape Cod Regional SWAT Team was requested to the scene to make entry into the house.

Approximately 15 minutes later the remaining occupants exited the residence and were detained. The residence was searched for any other occupants with negative results. Interviews were conducted of all of the involved individuals and it was determined that gunshots were not fired. The sound of gunshots was determined to have been coming from a backfiring motorcycle that was being operated by a resident of the house.

The incident lasted approximately 2 hours and all involved were released without further incident. Several of the involved were highly intoxicated which is believed to have played a role in the incident.

The Harwich Police were assisted by the Brewster Police and members of the Cape Cod Regional SWAT Team.
