Barnstable Police announce promotions


HYANNISFrom Barnstable Police: The Barnstable Police Department is proud to announce the promotion of Sergeant Mark Butler to the Rank of Lieutenant and Officer Spencer Jackson and Officer Nicholas Atcheson to the rank of Sergeant.

Lieutenant Butler
Lieutenant Mark Butler is a 24-year veteran of the Barnstable Police Department. During his time with the Barnstable Police Department, he has held several specialty positions, including serving as a field training officer and a mountain bike officer. Additionally, Lt. Butler served as an operator on the CCRLEC SWAT team between 2006 and 2013. In 2011, Lt. Butler was selected as a narcotics detective in the Investigative Services Division and was assigned as the departments DEA Task Force Officer, which he served for 8 years. During his time as the DEA Task Force Officer, Lt. Butler received several awards including a national award in 2020 for operation “Heroin Highway” and the Investigative Achievement Award from the US Attorney’s Office for operation “Cape Bullies.”

In 2016, Lt. Butler was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. As a Sergeant, Lt. Butler supervised and managed the narcotics investigations unit for 4 years before returning to the Patrol Division as a Patrol Sergeant on the evening shift. In 2021, Lt. Butler was selected as the supervisor for the Community Impact Unit. During his time with the Community Impact Unit Lt. Butler focused on quality-of-life issues, homelessness, mental illness, and substance use in the downtown Hyannis area. He also oversaw the unit during a time when the department acquired its first civilian mental health clinician.

In 2023, Lt. Butler returned to the Detective Division as a Detective Sergeant and re-established the narcotics investigations unit. Lt Butler held this position for two years before returning to the Patrol Division as a Patrol Sergeant on the day shift.

Lt. Butler has earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology from the University of Southern Maine and is currently working towards completing his Master’s Degree in Justice Administration from Faulkner University.

Sergeant Jackson
Sergeant Spencer Jackson is a 15-year veteran of the Barnstable Police Department. Prior to joining the Barnstable Police Department, he graduated from Barnstable High School and worked as a Summer Officer with the Nantucket Police Department. During his time with the Barnstable Police Department, Sgt. Jackson has held numerous specialty positions, including being a Field Training Officer, Mountain Bike Officer, Drone Pilot, Firearms Instructor, Health and Wellness Coordinator, sexual assault investigator, and has served as a detective in the Investigative Services Division. Sgt. Jackson has also served as an operator on the CCRLEC SWAT team for the past 11 years and was recently promoted to Assistant Team Leader.

Sgt. Jackson has received several letters of recognition for his involvement and response to an active shooter, murder investigations, kidnappings, and home invasions. He has also received several commendations, including one in 2018 for his response to the tragic death of Yarmouth Police Department Sgt. Sean Gannon.

Sgt. Jackson has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Johnson & Wales University, where he graduated Mana Cum Laude. Sgt. Jackson will be assigned to the Patrol Division.

Sergeant Atcheson
Sgt. Atcheson is a 10-year veteran of the Barnstable Police Department. Sgt. Atcheson was born and raised in the town of Barnstable and prior to joining BPD graduated from Barnstable High School in 2010. While attending Barnstable High School, Sgt. Atcheson was an intern with the Barnstable Police Department.

During his time with the Barnstable Police Department, Sgt. Atcheson has held numerous specialty positions including being a field training officer, marine unit officer, mountain bike officer, health and wellness coordinator, Police Academy Liaison, Sexual Assault Investigator, CCRLEC SWAT operator and is on the executive board of the departments peer support team. Currently, Sgt. Atcheson is a detective in the Investigative Services Division and is a Task Force Officer with the Massachusetts State Police ICAC Task Force.

Sgt. Atcheson has received several letters of recognition for his involvement and response to multiple violent assaults and calls regarding mental health emergencies. Sgt. Atcheson has also received unit citations for his involvement in a long-term narcotics investigation and for his response to an active shooter. Sgt. Acheson has also received recognition for his volunteer work with Big Brothers Big Sisters and his involvement in the Barnstable Police Department’s “Kids Day.”

Sgt. Atcheson has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Westfield State University. Sgt Atcheson. will be assigned to the Patrol Division
