MARSTONS MILLS – Kindergarten students at West Villages Elementary School recently had an opportunity to learn about public safety and emergency response during the second session of the Junior Police Academy, presented in partnership with the Barnstable Police Department and COMM Fire Department.

Barnstable Police Sgt. Ross joined COMM Fire Department Lieutenant McGonigle and Firefighter Laffey for the educational program, which introduced young students to the equipment and responsibilities of local emergency responders.

During the session, students learned about specialized equipment firefighters use to protect the community and respond to emergencies.

The kindergarten students also received an up-close look at a Barnstable Police cruiser and the COMM Fire Department’s ladder truck, giving them an opportunity to become more familiar with the vehicles used by local first responders.

The program is designed to introduce children to public safety at an early age while encouraging positive relationships between students and emergency personnel.

In a social media post, the Barnstable Police Department thanked the COMM Fire Department, Lieutenant McGonigle, Firefighter Laffey and Chief Hill for their continued support and participation in the Junior Police Academy.

Police officials emphasized the importance of partnerships between public safety agencies and local schools in providing educational opportunities for young residents.

The Junior Police Academy is intended to help students better understand the work of police officers and firefighters while building trust and familiarity with the emergency responders who serve their community.
