HYANNIS PORT – Officers onboard a Barnstable Police boat pulled two people from the water after their sailboat reported foundered off Squaw Island about 2 PM Thursday. The two were wet and cold but appeared uninjured. The police boat brought them to the Lewis Bay boat ramp where they declined medical treatement.
From Barnstable Police: On Thursday, October 1, 2026, Barnstable Police Department Sergeants Anthony D’Angelo and David Foley were conducting training aboard the Barnstable Police Department boat E-601, the Gannon, when they assisted in the rescue of two sailors whose catamaran had capsized approximately three miles offshore from Craigville Beach.
At approximately 1:54 PM, Barnstable Police Dispatch received a call from a Centerville man who reported that his sailboat had capsized and that he and his friend were in the water approximately 3 miles offshore from Craigville Beach.
Barnstable Police Dispatcher Natalia Cattabriga obtained critical information from the caller that helped establish their approximate location. Sergeants D’Angelo and Foley immediately responded aboard the Gannon while the Barnstable Harbormaster’s Office, COMM Fire, and Hyannis Fire were also dispatched to assist.
Sergeants D’Angelo and Foley located the overturned catamaran approximately three miles offshore. However, the two men had drifted away from the vessel and were not initially visible.
Working closely with Dispatcher Cattabriga, who maintained communication with the two men and provided the Gannon with real-time location updates, the officers were able to locate the two men approximately 200 yards from their overturned sailboat.
Both men were wearing personal flotation devices and had been able to maintain communication with Barnstable Police using a cell phone protected inside a plastic bag.
Sergeants D’Angelo and Foley maneuvered the Gannon alongside the two men and assisted them aboard the police vessel. As the two men were brought onto the Gannon, a Barnstable Harbormaster vessel arrived on scene to assist.
Neither of the men were injured. Both men were safely returned to shore.
The Barnstable Police Department commends Sergeants D’Angelo and Foley, Dispatch Supervisor Hollander, Dispatcher Cattabriga, Dispatcher Hersey and Officer Moore for their professionalism and performance during this incident.
This incident also serves as an important reminder to boaters to always wear a properly fitted personal flotation device and to carry a reliable means of communication while on the water.
